No Borders camp in Rotterdam

From 2nd - 10th August 2013, No Borders held a camp in Rotterdam. All photos © Hassan 2013

No Borders campaigners ran a week long camp in Rotterdam, with a whole range of talks, workshops, exhibitions and actions against immigration controls.

One of the actions, outside a bank and a public library, involved campaigners, dressed in cheap white overalls, doing a bit of street theatre and asking passers-by for their ID. At some point, a police commander told the campaigners they should not be doing that, as it was 'scaring the people'. Scaring migrants and refugees was, on the other hand, OK? The activist in the photo responded by asking the police commander for his ID.

Another action was outside the Moroccan Consulate, as, from what we understand, Morocco has a special agreement with EU to hold migrants in detention camps, which has, so far, resulted in three deaths. One of the banners read 'Stop the EU-sponsored violence by the Moroccan state against the migrants of Sub-Sahara'.

There was also a solidarity action outside one of the detention centres near the airport. Campaigners had written the contact number on a huge banner and, while they were outside the centre, at least two detainees called the number to talk about what they were going through.
