Report from the anti-fracking camp in Blackpool.

We visited the Fylde anti-fracking camp on a gorgeous sunny day, when sitting in a quiet green field, sipping tea in the shade of a tidy, well-stocked tent seemed idyllic… but it was only a day after the remains of hurricane Bertha had been raging here, when even significantly more permanent structures had been struggling to hold against the storm… yet the mothers and nanas of Lancashire held against the scam that is fracking.

The camp sits in a field off Preston New Road, next to the site for which the shale gas industry operator Cuadrilla has submitted a bid for planning permission to drill and frack. The field was taken at dawn on the 7th Aug by the OMG (Operation Mums and Grandmas), a group of inspiring Lancashire women fighting to protect their families and their futures, who wrong-footed the security guards camped on the farm; there is a good video of the action here.

As far as we could see, the camp was populated entirely by the locals. While we were there, we heard of unhelpful bus drivers who made it hard for new arrivals to get to the camp. Apart from that, it appears that there is a strong neighbourhood support for the camp, with anti-fracking stickers ubiquitous in the area, prominent at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool and we also suspect it was our screaming-yellow anti-fracking wrist-bands that earned us a free tour of the textile museum in Burnley.

Show your solidarity with the camp: visit it at Preston New Road PR4 3PE or send messages of support.

If you can, go to the Reclaim the Power camp. The six-day anti-fracking camp started yesterday (#reclaimthepower 14-20 August), this year joining the mums and nanas on the frontline of the Lancashire anti-fracking fight, to amplify the message that the shale gas industry and Cuadrilla in particular are not wanted.
