Suspend the CoolTan board

Campaigners to Save CoolTan Arts are asking Charity Commission to suspend and investigate its Board of Trustees and senior staff.

Michelle Baharier, founder and former CEO of CoolTan Arts charity, was initially suspended by the CoolTan Arts Board of Trustees. To say that the entire process was handled extremely insensitively and messily would be an understatement – Michelle and her union and legal representatives spent months trying to find out the reasons for her suspension; the Board and senior staff made no attempts to work through the allegations with Michelle; they showed no consideration whatsoever to her disability etc. Michelle has now been formally dismissed after she failed to attend a hearing which she could not attend as it did not meet her access needs.

Since this whole sorry saga started in October 2015, campaign to Save CoolTan Arts and reinstate Michelle has highlighted the devastating effect this is having on the charity and the many extremely vulnerable people who depend on it for support. Laura, one of the campaigners, says, 'Many in the campaign think that Michelle's suspension and now sacking is a smokescreen to avoid transparency and drain the charity's funds. The Board first employed Herbie Taylor, as an interim CEO, then brought in Tom McCabe, who used to work with Herbie on another charity, Little Starz, which Ofsted closed down as 'inadequate', ie they made a mess of it. They've got no experience of working with people with disabilities or mental health issues. They don't seem to have much of an interest in it either, nor the arts. Would you give them a job? And pay them £40 - £50K a year? While vulnerable people are being turned away from the charity?!'

From what we understand, the Charity Commission has been investigating the case since February 2016. Campaigners are now asking that the Charity Commission freezes all the charity's assets and suspend and investigate the Board and senior staff, before any more damage is done – some 2,000 people a year use CoolTan and the campaigners are extremely concerned that, if you have trustees and senior staff who do not follow the procedures and policies, who repeatedly breach governance, who have little interest in or understanding of the needs of the people supported by the charity, its days are numbered.
